Neighborware Project: On Site Sculpture (Mascot) Statement
Our idea is based on the conceptual understandings surrounding the presence of a public sculpture, an art object that creates a separate site filling an empty space with meaning.
In the case of the spatial gap between the Westchester-Loyola Village Library and the Westchester Senior Center, there was a lack of a common marker matching the lack of interaction between the two sites. Creating a “common” sculpture, which performs as a link between the two locations, aids the communication between and about the two sites. The creation of this work fills the spatial gap and adds a community marker, adding to the conversation surrounding both the eventual artwork and the further emphasized spatial relationship between the two sites.
When choosing our subject we decided upon a representational sculpture, a stylized depiction of an elephant. The physical presence of an elephant suited both our aesthetic and contextual needs, the weight and presence of the figure (especially in a dual representation) added to sculptures ability to best personify the weighty subject of a lacking interaction between the two locations. The ability for a work of art to create a common site and a location based vernacular is essential to the successful building of a link between these two important community locations.
The brilliance of this project lies in its specificity to the site and its ability to be tailored for the communal needs of other sites. We can see other locations utilizing this project idea to fill and link other locations in need of social interaction.
Thank you for the comment, to tell you the truth i was skeptical about the WSC at first but i actually really enjoy the class very much. The way it's done is interesting and i'm liking it more and more every week:)
For the NEIGHBORWARE proposal im not what i really want to do. Even though im in digital i really love architecture and landscaping. One idea i have come up with is putting type of structure like a roof/canopy. Ill try and bring visuals to show and better explain on Friday but i believ that when you put a roof over two things they become neighbors and even friends or family.
The other idea i had was a complete re-do of the landscape that would better the communication and interaction between the two buildings.
For the last idea im still trying to come up with something and hopefully ill have it Friday.
To answer the last part of your question im interested in metalworking because i love working with my hands, i like building, fixing, yes even destroying things with my hands(demolition). im a really physical person so i like doing physical things. I have done sculpture for my 3d and now i want to move on to metal to see how that gos.
Thnx for the comment again,
Brandon
thank you
