IL: Elderspace
Neighborware Project: On Site Sculpture (Mascot) Statement
Our idea is based on the conceptual understandings surrounding the presence of a public sculpture, an art object that creates a separate site filling an empty space with meaning.
In the case of the spatial gap between the Westchester-Loyola Village Library and the Westchester Senior Center, there was a lack of a common marker matching the lack of interaction between the two sites. Creating a “common” sculpture, which performs as a link between the two locations, aids the communication between and about the two sites. The creation of this work fills the spatial gap and adds a community marker, adding to the conversation surrounding both the eventual artwork and the further emphasized spatial relationship between the two sites.
When choosing our subject we decided upon a representational sculpture, a stylized depiction of an elephant. The physical presence of an elephant suited both our aesthetic and contextual needs, the weight and presence of the figure (especially in a dual representation) added to sculptures ability to best personify the weighty subject of a lacking interaction between the two locations. The ability for a work of art to create a common site and a location based vernacular is essential to the successful building of a link between these two important community locations.
The brilliance of this project lies in its specificity to the site and its ability to be tailored for the communal needs of other sites. We can see other locations utilizing this project idea to fill and link other locations in need of social interaction.

I happend to see your workspace the other day. Lovely water colors. I like the metaphor of being frozen and "defrosted"
Maybe you can paint some of our delightful elders.
Maybe an artful response like that will make nice NEIGHBORWARE.
